Product Review: Ultimate MMA Conditioning
If you asked me to choose only one book, to help me with my strength and conditioning, i would shout out “Joel Jamiesons Ultimate MMA Conditioning” without even thinking. But first a little about the author. Joel Jamieson is a pioneer and leader in MMA Strength and Conditioning. His highly scientific methods of training has led him to coach at all levels imaginable, from his early days coaching the Seattle Sea-hawks and pro fighters at AMC Pankration to the present where he has coached more fighters than you could poke a stick at. These fighters have fought for the largest promotions such as the UFC, PrideFC, Dream, Shooto, WEC and K-1. Guys like Rich Franklin, Chris Leben, Jens Pulver, Maurice Smith, Spencer Fisher, Matt Brown, Hayato Sakurai, KJ Noons, Ivan Salaverry and Akira Shoji have been among these top fighters that rely on Joel’s scientific approach to get in shape and ready for a fight.
This book is not like your usual strength and conditioning book with set templates of routines to follow to the tee. But what you will find in this book, is a very clear explanation of the principals and methods that go into developing ones athletic performance. Joel has created this book not just to show you what works but to make you understand why it works, and to use this to your advantage to work more smarter and effectively. This in return saves you an endless amount of time and energy to take your strength and conditioning to new heights.
The book is broken down in specific sections so it has to be read from beginning to end for you to understand the bigger picture of strength and conditioning and how it relates to combat sports.
What Joel first does is give you a rundown on methods, training techniques and underlying principles on how to develop your conditioning. It can get quite technical, but after a few re-reads you start to get the picture. Secondly after you understand the basic principles of the energy systems involved and how they work, he then goes onto explain how to assess and improve these systems. Thirdly Joel will present you with a model to work with that you can individualise an 8 week program with, to target the weak areas that you have found during your assessments.
Now i picked up this book late 2009, with hopes that it would improve my conditioning or lack there of. From first hand experience and by following his training methods, i finally broke through a plateau in my conditioning that held me back for so long. I would no longer gas during long pad rounds and wrestling practice. I was going through the movements with ease giving me more time to improve my skills and technique. Even if you have read books by Ross Enamait, Rippetoe or Everette, this book has so much to offer and is unlike any strength and conditioning book i have read before. He even breaks the stigma that all you need is HIIT training and focuses on adaptions as a result of training instead of just training in itself. Joel has his own website at www.8weeksout.com that i recommend you visit where he continues to help athletes over the world seeking his extensive knowledge and experience in the field of Strength and Conditioning.

Did you get the heart rate moniter with this? A lot of the other reviews state that you need the heart rate moniter in order to do his routines. Did you find this to be true?
Make sure you get the heart rate monitor with the book. It doesn’t specifically have to be the one advertised on the website, i used the most basic Polar FS1 when i was doing my first block.
But yes it is true, you will need a heart rate monitor. It will be a great investment.
