Oh to be young and jetting off to a far-flung country to learn a martial art. The Thailand Training guide, written by Bill Forestell, takes you on a different tour of Thailand. The book is meant for people who plan to train in one of Thailand’s famous Muay Thai camps. However, the book doesn’t just dwell on the customs of the sport or on techniques to become a better fighter. The book is part memoir, part blog post and part Lonely Planet travel guide, albeit with a few curse words thrown in.

Forestell gives an honest account of his time in Thailand, not just in terms of training to be a Muay Thai fighter but also his experiences as a visitor in the country. And just as he has been trained to do, he pulls no punches. He talks about trying to get with Thai prostitutes and tells of a friend who was distraught after having sex with a ladyboy. If you don’t know what a ladyboy is, the book holds the key to a surprise. Needless to say, at the very least, the book is entertaining.

However, the guide is not just a retelling of misadventures in an exotic place. The book is a detailed guide on Thai customs. In a country as traditional as Thailand, knowing what is acceptable may prevent a lot of hassle, maybe even jail time. It also has information on training in Muay Thai hot spots such as Pattaya and Bangkok, along with a list of camps and tips on getting around. For the uninitiated, Forestell also writes about the prevalent travel scams in the country. He lists everything, from local girls who borrow money for a “sick buffalo” to training camps that overcharge for accommodations.

It might come as a surprise, but having a great training experience in Thailand takes a bit more planning than what you’d expect. This book is essential for a less stressful trip.

Born in Australia, training in martial arts since the age of 9. My first trip to Thailand was back in 2007. Since then i have made numerous visits back to the "land of smiles" to feed my addiction of Muay Thai. During the month of November in 2010 i had to decide between working a 9 to 5 job back home for the rest of my life, or sell all my worldly possessions and move to Thailand to live and train for the next few years. Thankfully i chose the latter. I now spend my time training Muay Thai, meeting new and interesting circles of people, sipping coconuts under palm trees on the beach and measuring the cost of everything on how much Pad Thai i could buy with that money.
