The Best Time To Join A Camp

When is the best time to head to Thailand to learn Muay Thai? The quick, off-the-top-of-the-head answer would be… right now. As soon as you’re done reading this article, log on to a travel website and book yourself a flight.
Most people make the mistake of thinking that they have to reach a certain skill level in Muay Thai before they can go and train in Thailand. It’s not totally unreasonable. Before you invest in paying for a gym, it wouldn’t hurt to have the confidence within yourself that you can cut it as a fighter. However, not having that kind of confidence in your skills should not deter you from getting on a plane to Thailand. It is not uncommon for people who have no Muay Thai training to enroll in camps.

Believe it or not, going to Thailand while you are still a beginner may actually be easier on your learning curve. In terms of form and technique, the way they do things in Thailand is probably different from what you’re used to. This is regardless of how long you have been training in Muay Thai. Going there as a novice would save you the trouble of re-learning techniques that you practiced beforehand. Once you step on a Muay Thai training camp, you are on an even keel with every other new student.

If you want to get into shape, training in Thailand would be a great way to do so. The training is intense, the weather is warm, the food is healthy and the distractions are few. Conditioning exercises such as skipping, running and shadow boxing are a common occurrence during “training holidays” to Thailand. However, this is not to say that you should save all the work for when you get into camp. Preparing you body for the strain of an intense Muay Thai training regimen would lead to a more fulfilling learning experience.
