My First Week At Phuket Top Team
Posted in Blog, Video Posts on May 17, 2011
Here we are. First video blog complete! It’s only around 4mins long, but took me two days to complete! There was a lot of footage to rummage through, pick out and place into the video.
Phuket’s a whole different world. A big change from Bangkok. All the Thai’s here speak English quite well. This would have been convenient during my first trip ever to Thailand 3 years ago, but now that i know the language well and want to keep learning, it’s really put a roadblock up for me. In Bangkok i spoke Thai and was replied to in Thai. I picked up the language with increased speed every month. Over here in Phuket, I’ll talk Thai, but always get a reply in English. It’s making it difficult to learn more and even maintain what i know already.
The training is a big change! It’s still good, don’t get me wrong. Here in Phuket, it’s a group training atmosphere. Everybody skip, everybody stretch, everybody shadowbox. Now clinch together and then spar together. In Bangkok i was surrounded by Thai fighters. A few foreigners would come now and then, but there was always a constant number of Thai fighter’s training alongside me who fought every month. Nobody was standing around telling anyone what to do. The Thai’s and I would skip, shadowbox and do our wraps without instruction. There wasn’t any funky music thumping out of some speakers as we trained. Everyone went through the motions that they had been doing their whole lives.
One thing i notice here is that, here in Phuket, when i comes time to clinch and spar, the majority of it was done with other foreigners. At Sitmonchai Gym in Bangkok you would never clinch or spar with a foreigner. They threw you in with the Thai’s. Hard clinching and technical sparring with young Thai fighters day in and day out. This really improved my game and helped with camaraderie.
My training sessions here has consisted of sparring and running mainly. I have been training with my housemate Rafael who will be fighting in a big MMA match in Bangkok on the 25th of June. As of the 25th of May, Phuket Top Team will be fully open to the public. This is when i will be able to go full throttle with training. Muay Thai, MMA, Sambo and BJJ will be on the book. BJJ will be my main focus for the next month and a half as i will be entering a BJJ competition on the 19th of June. I’ll keep you updated on the new gym, it’s trainers and facilities as it all folds out.
Hope you enjoy the video and can give me some good feedback!

hi, i am going phuket for mma,end of september, just for 2 weeks
i got hard time where to go tiger or phuket top team?
what u say guys?
or week there and week there, o both?
thanks
Hi Malaleo,
I say try out both. Both gyms offer great training but have their own unique atmosphere to them.
It’s going to depend on your personal preference when it comes down to it.
Maybe i day at tiger and then a day at PTT. Then you can decide which one you would like to spend most of your time at.
Hey Mike,
Ive trained at dragon muay thai before and also tiger on seperate occasions, i liked Dragon a lot more as i connected with the trainers well. Just wondering what your thoughts are on the Phuket top team and the atmosphere in the gym??? seriously debating a 3month stop to work on some skills.
Thanks,
Neil.
p.s – loved the blog, enjoyed watching some of your sparring….and your right, not having shoes on definitely makes you stronger haha!!!
Hey Neil,
I’ve been to both Tiger and Dragon before myself and still drop in now and then. Phuket Top Team has a great atmosphere. There’s many high calibre trainers and great training facilities. You’ll have to try it out yourself before deciding though. It’s not for everyone just like Tiger and Dragon.
