A Word Of Caution To Any Would Be Fighters

caution 011 A Word Of Caution To Any Would Be Fighters
There is a collection of people you might even say sub-culture, that lurks in Thailand. They bide their time in dimly lit areas, beneath doorways and around corners. Their friendly….when they want to be. These are a passionate people, they won’t hesitate to fall in love or rush into an argument hands gesturing wildly while their slender throats expel harsh tones into the air. They are the bane of any ambitions of training and fighting in Thailand. Once they sink their well manicured claws into you its hard to shake them. In case you haven’t guessed, it is of course the “bar girls of Thailand” that I’m talking about and yes everything you’ve heard about them is true.

I guess I’ll start by explaining the story that inspired this post that for anonymities sake we will call “The tale of Tom”

Tom is a passionate guy, if he’s going to do something he’s going to do it right but he’s also going to have fun doing it. Tom is a pretty happy, easy going laid back guy, the kind of guy you can make best friends with over a tall beer and long talk. When I first met Tom he had recently given up cigarettes, alcohol, caffeine and gambling all which he explained he’d spent considerable time abusing. Tom has done and seen a lot, sure that the world had more to offer than a 9-5 job he decided to do instead what he loved, what all of us love ”the pursuit of pleasure”. In Toms case this was travel. Tom is now well traveled and practically brimming with hilarious anecdotes and tales. We arrived at Lanna Muay Thai at the same time, Tom had fought before and intended to spend a considerable amount of time in Chiang Mai training and fighting, we became good friends. Two weeks later he was embarking on his final detox a stint at Doi Suthep Temple on a strict diet of vegetables, rice, silence and meditation. The final test of his time there would be 3 days of strict meditation and no sleep, most people opt for 3-5 days of this Tom decided on 21, like I said “he’s a passionate guy and if he’s going to do something he’s going to do it right”.

Fast forward 3 weeks. Tom returns visibly thinner “yeah it was good mate, made me think about everything thats happened in my life, I was thinking about things that happened I’d never thought about before helped me sort out a lot of stuff ya know”. We went out to get some lunch, while enjoying a delicious meal aptly named “exploding egg” Tom produced a bt20 note on which he had scrawled a list of the things he intended to do upon return from the temple; eat pizza, shave, get a sak yant-bamboo tattoo, and get back to training. There was one item however not mentioned on the list but most certainly cataloged in Toms mind “I might get a girl tonight..”

I knocked on his door, noise from within the room. He opened the door slightly and peered out cautiously ” Oh Alex mate good to see ya” he exclaimed genuinely. His hair was wet, his skin pale, and his eyes wide. Numerous M150, Redbull and beer bottles lay discarded about the floor, a large bottle of Whiskey sat amid several of them the remnants of which contained the ends of many cigarettes butts, on his side table was a large cluster of glasses, cigarette boxes, lighters, and alcohol. Clothes were strewn about the floor and melodic music hung in the air. His sheets were skewed on the bed and decorated like a mosaic with valium. From the ends of the sheets protruded two slender legs, tattoos ran up the length of one. “Oh yeah this is Bea” the girl pulled the sheets back, she smiled a sleepy smile she seemed like she had been in this situation before. “ah yeah mate, I’ll be back training next week I cant keep this up much longer”. It had been 3 weeks.

Born in Australia, training in martial arts since the age of 9. My first trip to Thailand was back in 2007. Since then i have made numerous visits back to the "land of smiles" to feed my addiction of Muay Thai. During the month of November in 2010 i had to decide between working a 9 to 5 job back home for the rest of my life, or sell all my worldly possessions and move to Thailand to live and train for the next few years. Thankfully i chose the latter. I now spend my time training Muay Thai, meeting new and interesting circles of people, sipping coconuts under palm trees on the beach and measuring the cost of everything on how much Pad Thai i could buy with that money.

Geez… Temptations in Thailand! How have you avoided them this long? I’m afraid when I travel there I will encounter this. It seems sooo normal and easily accessible…

Trust me, so many guys come to thailand with all the talk about training full time and fighting.
After two weeks you stop seeing them at training because they are getting pissed every night, partying and getting with as many Thai girls as possible. Usually a recipe for disaster

Aha yeah the temptations are abundantly available over here, just keep your head on the right way and don’t forget why you came out here, which is fine if you came out for bargirls you are certainly in the right place, but if you want to train hang out with like minded people, get to know the trainers, have fun but know when to stop.

Whats really funny is I’m pretty sure I know who Bea is. Stories like this have prompted me to often repeat, “come for the training, stay for the pu55y.” If I’ve seen this many times in CM, I wonder how much worse it is down south?
